GITO Baloi - bassist and bandleader - died in Johannesburg in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Baloi was driving to his home in Kensington, Johannesburg after a Saturday night concert, when his vehicle was shot at in Nugget Street in downtown Johannesburg. Police report that robbery appears the motive for the attack.
The Mozambican-born musician became known for his innovative work with the internationally acclaimed trio "Tananas", and has also released three solo albums and participated in a multitude of collaborations.
The musician is survived by his wife, Erica Hibbert, and daughters Lorha (aged eight) and Tiva, (aged six).
A memorial service will be held at the Newtown Music Hall on Wednesday 7 April, from 12 -2pm.
